Donate by December 31 to be eligible to claim your donation on your current tax return. Eligible donations receive an official donation receipt.

How your donation works for you as an individual (general example): 

When you donate to a registered charity, you receive an official donation receipt that you can claim on your tax return. (any monetary donations over $20.00 receive an official tax receipt)

Example for illustration only (Alberta, varies by province):

Federal credit: 15% of $100 = $15

Alberta credit: 10% of $100 = $10

*Total tax credit on a $100 gift: $25

For businesses:

Businesses don’t receive “tax credits” instead, they receive a tax deduction.  A charitable donation reduces the company’s taxable income, lowering its overall tax bill.

This can make charitable giving a high-impact strategy for corporate social responsibility and year-end tax planning.

Some employers offer donation or volunteer-hour matching programs. Check with your HR team to see if your workplace participates.
