Celebrating Nutrition Month: Supporting Health and Well-Being Through Food

March is Nutrition Month, a time to recognize the important role food plays in supporting health, independence, and overall well-being.

For older adults, good nutrition is especially important. As people age, their bodies change. For example, metabolism may slow, appetite can shift, and it can become harder to absorb certain nutrients. A balanced diet helps support muscle strength, bone health, immune function, and energy levels, helping seniors stay active and maintain their independence and quality of life.

At BSF Lifestyles, our nutrition and dietary teams play an essential role in supporting the health and well-being of residents across our communities.

Food as Connection and Care

For Mayra, working with residents goes beyond nutrition and is also about building relationships:

"What I love most about my job is the chance to truly connect with our residents. Sharing conversations with them during meals lets me understand their stories, preferences, and what brings them comfort. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that, through nutrition, I can contribute in even a small way to their quality of life.”

Supporting Quality of Life

For Marlin, nutrition is closely connected to residents’ well-being in long-term care.

"In our long-term care setting, nutrition is important to ensure that our residents meet their daily nutritional requirements to achieve a feeling of well being and enjoy their quality of life. I love working with the residents to meet their dietary needs and requests, and visiting them at mealtimes to follow-up if have any dietary concerns.”

Celebrating Our Nutrition Teams

During Nutrition Month, we recognize and thank the dietitians, dietary staff, and care teams who help ensure residents receive meals that are not only nutritious, but also enjoyable and meaningful.

Through thoughtful meal planning and genuine connection, they help residents feel supported, cared for, and at home.
